Visual Artist

Influenced by the traditions of East Asian Calligraphy and ink painting, Arthur approaches the brushstroke as a living gesture rather than a tool of description. Lisa’s work situates itself within a dialogue between contemporary abstraction and the long tradition of East Asian ink painting. Using ink and water on Xuan paper, she allows the inherent properties of the medium - absorption, diffusion and gravity - to participate actively in the formation of the image. Through this process, landscapes appear not as fixed representations but as atmospheric conditions: shifting spaces of mist, water and terrain.

Arthur’s practice draws particularly on the calligraphic understanding of the brushstroke as a carrier of energy and breath. Arthur treats the mark as both action and event.

In these paintings, gesture becomes a site where body, material, and landscape converge, allowing the image to emerge through the dynamic interaction of hand, ink and paper. The works function less as depictions of landscape than as records of its underlying dynamics - flow, erosion, atmosphere, and time.
